
WHO WE ARE
Act1 Theatre Consultants is a collaboration of Peter Henry Architect and Wesley Babcock Scenographic Designer, offering architectural and technical theatre consultation services for new construction, expansion, renovation, set/lighting design and capital projects to the world of the performing arts.
We believe that great theatres ought to be great buildings, and vice-versa. And we have worked in enough theatres to understand the balance.

Act1 is truly unique, and has a proven history of successful design in the performing arts sector in the fields of architecture, scenographic design, and technical direction.

MEET THE TEAM

Peter Henry
Peter Henry (he/him) is an architect registered in Nova and has been so since 1986. His practice includes residential and institutional projects. Peter has been involved in Theatre and Theatre Design throughout much of his working career. He has worked on some of the biggest theatres (Nigerian National Theatre in Abuja and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) and the smallest theatres (Halifax Music Co-op reno) and many in between. He mentored under Fred Lebensold at ARCOP working at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, and has collaborated with internationally recognized theatre consultants NOVITA Interpares and NovitaTECHNE.

Architect | Accessibility Auditor
Anne Sinclair
Anne Sinclair (she/her) was fortunate to gain an interest in accessibility from DAWN (Disabled Women's' Network) early in her career and has incorporated principles of Universal Design in all her work since the 1990's. Membership in the Rick Hansen Foundation and the Nova Scotia Accessibility Advisory Board allow her to be up to date on the latest research on inclusive design for all - people with disabilities, the Deaf, and neurodivergent people. Anne has years of experience assessing architects' drawings in the design phases, and conducting facility assessments for a variety of colleagues. Our practice also provides architectural services for accessibility upgrades to existing buildings. We are currently performing accessibility audits in Nova Scotia

Senior Consultant to Cooperative and Not-For-Profit organizations in the Arts/Cultural Sector
Sébastien Labelle
Sébastien Labelle (he/him) has been working in the performing arts sector for over a decade as a performer, producer and arts administrator. He has served as Executive Director of the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op for eight years where he strengthened the organization's co-operative structure and led it through a large capital campaign to purchase its home building and undergo major renovations. He has also served as Director of the Mayworks Festival for ten years where he annually curates and presents events across artistic disciplines. He has performed with some of Nova Scotia's preeminent theatre and dance companies including Eastern Front Theatre, Halifax Theatre for Young People, Symphony Nova Scotia's The Nutcracker, Mocean Dance, Matchstick Theatre, Villain's Theatre, Zuppa and 2b Theatre.

Wesley Babcock
Wesley Babcock (they/them) is a queer set and lighting designer, and technical director for the theatre, currently based in Halifax, NS, where they are studying Architecture at Dalhousie University. In Atlantic Canada, they have created work for the likes of Neptune Theatre, Matchstick Theatre, The Highland Arts Theatre, Watermark Theatre, and Festival Antigonish. They are the recipient of the Wes Daniels Design Award (2020), and have three times been nominated for a Robert Merritt Award for Set Design (2019, 2022, 2023). Elsewhere, he has worked with Crow's Theatre, Coal Mine Theatre, Talk Is Free Theatre, Tapestry Opera, and Moment Factory, among others.

Janelle Brookes
Janelle Brookes (she/they) is an architecture student and graphic designer. They are currently completing their Masters degree in architecture after completing their Bachelor of Environmental Design. They had previously completed two years of a Double Major in Urban Planning and Sustainability. Janelle has over 12 years of experience in theatrical productions, both as a performer and behind the scenes. In addition to their technical experience, Janelle co-founded a platform dedicated to increasing knowledge and representation within the design field.
